Conyears-Ervin Encourages Use of Local Cooling Centers During Hot Summer

CHICAGO – As the weather continues to warm this summer, state Rep. Melissa Conyears-Ervin encourages members of the community to utilize local cooling centers to stay healthy and beat the heat.

“As summer temperatures continue to rise, I encourage all members of our community take care of their health and utilize local cooling centers to catch a break from the heat,” Conyears-Ervin said. “This summer may pack some miserably warm days and no person should be exposed for too long. We should work together to check on our neighbors, especially our seniors, to ensure they are okay and inform them of these local cooling centers.”

The City of Chicago offers many cooling centers throughout the city for use by the public. Libraries, senior centers and police stations can be used during regular hours to stay cool. A full list of locations, including the Garfield Center located at 10 S. Kedzie Ave., can be found at https://goo.gl/W981pf. Additionally, residents who cannot check on the wellbeing of neighbors, family and friends are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a wellbeing check.

“During these hot months, it is critical that we take care of ourselves and our neighbors,” Conyears-Ervin said. “These locations are open and available, and I would encourage anyone who has concerns about the temperature of their home, or a friend or loved one, to take advantage of these spaces and stay safe.”
