CHICAGO – State Rep. Melissa Conyears-Ervin, D-Chicago, will continue to fight to provide working families with affordable child care after ending Gov. Rauner’s budget crisis.
“Working families throughout Illinois have lost access to affordable child care due to the governor’s budget crisis,” said Conyears-Ervin. “As a mother, I know how difficult it can be to find someone who will care for your child at an affordable rate. By passing a budget, working families can again have access to this vital service.”
When Governor Rauner’s budget crisis began, working families across Illinois were cut off from the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). One of the first bills Conyears-Ervin introduced as a new legislator, House Bill 721, would restore the eligibility threshold to 185% of the federal-poverty level to ensure that families always have access to the vital program that helps parents have childcare when they are at work or school. In the budget that Conyears-Ervin passed, families will again have access to this program.
“By funding this program, parents can once again go to school or work, or both, and know that their children are in good and safe hands,” said Conyears-Ervin. “No parent should be forced to quit their job or stop going to school simply because one individual wants to play political games with their family’s livelihood. I will continue fighting to ensure that this program receives funding.”
